Josh Blakely
Assistant Baseball Coach
The McMurry connection helped John Byington's decision to hire Josh Blakely in September as assistant baseball coach. Blakely played under former McMurry assistant coach Jason Marshall at UT-San Antonio and coached alongside former McMurry assistant Scott Malone at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in 2009.
Blakely played two seasons for UTSA in 2006 and 2007 where his career record was 11-2. His senior season, he compiled an 8-0 record and posted a 2.60 ERA earning second-team all Southland Conference honors.
Blakely worked as a reliever both seasons and his last year with the Roadrunners, he helped UTSA to a 24-6 record and a conference championship. In his last year with the team, Blakely walked just 13 hitters in 69.1 innings pitched and struck out 59.
Over a nine-game span, Blakely strung together 16.2 consecutive scoreless innings out of the bullpen for the Roadrunners and head coach Sherman Corbett. In his time at UTSA, he also played under assistant coach Jason Marshall who previously coached at McMurry University under head coach Lee Driggers from 1998-2000.
He graduated from UTSA in May 2008 with a degree in Business Management. From there, he left to become the assistant coach at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi for the 2009 season. He coached first base and was the pitching coach for the Islanders who posted an 18-38 record under head coach Scott Malone who also coached at McMurry University in 1998.
In the summer of 2008, Blakely coached the nation's No. 3-ranked USSSA baseball team for ages 15 and under. The team had a 35-6 record over the summer.
Blakely will take over pitching for Saltzgaber in his first season with McMurry.
“Josh is a great fit for our program, he brings a work ethic, pitching success and experience at the Division I level, and a youthful spirit that will greatly compliment our staff,” said Byington of Blakely.
Blakely played his first two seasons of collegiate baseball at Blinn Junior College. His father coaches high school football at Dallas Jesuit High School. He hails from Jacksonville, Texas.
