Matt Mumme
Offensive Coordinator / Quarterbacks
Much like his father, when Matt Mumme came to McMurry in April of 2009 to be the offensive coordinator, it was a homecoming of sorts.
Born in Stephenville, Texas, Matt Mumme followed his family wherever his dad, Hal, was coaching. From Stephenville, the Mumme’s went to El Paso when Hal was at UTEP, and by the time he was in high school, Hal was the coach at Valdosta State in Georgia. After stops in Kentucky, Louisiana and New Mexico, the job at McMurry brings Matt back to the Lone Star state.
Matt played his high school ball at Valdosta High (Ga.) at quarterback. Then, when Hal became the head coach at Kentucky, Matt followed. Though he had to play backup to Tim Couch, the 1999 Heisman Trophy runner-up to the University of Texas’ Ricky Williams, Matt still made his mark. He holds the 13th and 14th longest pass plays from scrimmage in Kentucky’s storied history at 79 and 78 yards respectively; both were for touchdowns.
One thing to say about Matt is that he’s been immersed in his father’s unique Air Raid Offensive system perhaps more than any other person other than Hal himself. Growing up, he watched his father’s teams run it, he ran it himself at Kentucky, and for the past six years he’s coached it.
Matt joined his father’s staff at Southeastern Louisiana State in 2002. The NCAA Division I-AA school was starting from scratch and the staff had a year to prepare before beginning competition in 2003. He was hired as the quarterbacks coach where he guided Martin Hankins who went on to pass for 7,777 yards and 65 touchdowns in two seasons while completing 63 percent of his passes. Hankins transferred to NCAA Division I-A Memphis for his final two seasons of eligibility.
After two seasons at SLA, Matt joined his father at NCAA Division I-A New Mexico State, but this time in addition to his quarterback coaching duties, he was named offensive coordinator.
Matt coached through a tough first season at NMSU in 2005 without the proper personnel under center. The team went 0-12 and it marked the first time Hal Mumme had ever coached a winless team. However, Chase Holbrook joined in 2006 and Matt saw his three-year quarterback break nearly every conceivable game, season and career passing record at NMSU. Holbrook tossed 85 touchdown passes in three seasons and threw for 10,846 yards.
Matt Mumme graduated from Valdosta High School in 1994, finished his degree at the University of Kentucky in 1999 and received his master’s degree in business administration at New Mexico State in 2009.
He and his wife, Fayedra, live in Abilene.
