Matt Garnett
Assistant Men's Basketball Coach

Garnett is entering his first year as Coach Holmes' top assistant after serving as the lead assistant for
Coach Robert Davenport at Wayland Baptist University.  Garnett’s primary responsibilities include on-floor coaching, recruiting and video scouting.

Grnett also has coaching experience at the high school level as he spent time as an assistant at South Houston High School under coach Barry Givson and at Midland High School under coach Kenny Hoffpauir.  Garnett, a member of the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) as well as the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches (TABC), has also been the lead point guard clinician at the Texas Prep Basketball School. 

As a player, Garnett was a three-year letterwinner for coach Todd Thurman at Wayland Baptist where he was an All-Sooner Athletic Conference selection as well as an NAIA All- American in 2004.  He was a three-year starter at point guard for the Pioneers and helped lead Wayland to three straight national tournament appearances, including two straight Sweet 16 appearances (2003 & 2004).  He then transferred to Biola University (Calif.) for his senior year to play for NAIA Hall of Fame coach Dave Holmquist.  In Garnett’s one year at Biola, he helped lead the Eagles to a 28-8 record and an Elite 8 appearance at the NAIA National Tournament.  Garnett has also spent time playing overseas in Italy, Portugal, Spain and Lithuania. 

Garnett was a four-year starter at point guard for coach Kenny Hoffpauir at Glen Rose High School.  Garnett helped Glen Rose win four district championships as well as three area championships.  Over Garnett’s four years playing at Glen Rose High School, the school went a combined 107-25.  Garnett was a two-time 3A All-State selection as well as the state’s 3-point champion for all classifications. 

A native of Pasadena, Texas, Garnett and his wife, Anna, reside in Abilene.  The couple have one daughter, Faith Kathleen, born last July.
