Mark Hathorn
Head Tennis Coach
McMurry’s Mark Hathorn finished his seventh season as the head men’s and women’s tennis coach in 2008. Hathorn and the program continue to head in the right direction as the women’s team made its second-straight appearance in the American Southwest Conference postseason tournament in 2008 and the men’s team made its first even appearance in the postseason tourney in 2008.
In his seven seasons at McMurry, Hathorn has seen the program turn out several all conference athletes and academic all-conference honorees as well. Most recently in 2008, Kristen Bray (first team all-West division) and Amy Torti (second team all-West division) were honored as all-conference players for the women. On the men’s side, four players were given all-conference nods under Hathorn’s direction as Will Davis (first team all-West), Daniel Olivares (second team all-West), Bryan Rainwater (ASC Newcomer of the Year), and Tony Williams (all-freshman team) were given conference honors.
In the classroom in 2008, Brad Armour and Brandon Armour each were named academic all-conference for the second-straight season while Bray was an academic all-conference selection for the second time on the women’s side.
Hathorn led the men’s team to a 12-7 overall record while McMurry finished second in the ASC West Division with a 6-1 mark falling only to nationally-ranked Hardin-Simmons. On the women’s side, McMurry finished 7-12 overall, however, the McMurry women were solid in conference play with a 5-2 record to finish third.
Prior to his years at McMurry, Hathorn was the head professional at Abilene’s Fairway Oaks Country Club from 1995-2003 and before that he worked as the tennis pro at Walden’s Lake Houston Country Club from 1989-1995.
As a collegiate player, Hathorn competed at Abilene Christian University from 1980-1984 where he was the Wildcats’ No. 1 player in both singles in doubles in each of his last two seasons. After college he was ranked at both the state and national levels for adult singles. He still enjoys playing in USTA-sanctioned state and national tournaments. In 1996 he was ranked nationally in the top 10 in the men’s over 30 singles bracket.
Hathorn and his wife Kelley, a McMurry graduate, have three daughters: Amy, Madison and Kaitlyn. The family makes their home in Abilene.
