McMurry Athletic Training & Sports Medicine

McMurry’s athletic training program is an integral part of the athletics program. The sports medicine staff, led by head athletic trainer Janet McMurray, is committed to the health and recovery of McMurry’s student athletes. With two full-time trainers, and 15 undergraduate assistants the staff works to help keep athletes at their healthiest and if need be, aid in the rehabilitation of injured student athletes.

McMurray also heads up an undergraduate program that allows students to participate with hands-on training and eventually gain the state of Texas’ Licensure for Athletic Training. With 17 intercollegiate sports sponsored by McMurry’s athletic department, students are able to immediately begin participating in on-the-job training.

Students are required to follow the curriculum set by the state of Texas and must complete 300 hours of lab work per semester in the three-year program. Students get to travel around the southern United States following around McMurry’s athletics programs.

Many students who have completed the undergraduate program at McMurry have chosen to continue their training in Physical Therapy School. Hardin-Simmons, one of three universities in Abilene, has a graduate P.T. school program, and every student from McMurry who has completed the undergraduate program has been accepted to HSU’s graduate school.

Several graduates have gone on to get head or assistant athletic training jobs in Texas at the high school level prior to their time at McMurry. Graduates, among other schools, currently work at Southlake Carroll, San Antonio Madison, Abilene, Plano, Wichita Falls Rider, Cisco and Killeen High Schools.

Once students receive their state licensure after taking the exit test, McMurry graduates will have met the pre-requisite to sit for the national test to become a member of the National Athletic Trainer’s Association.

Prospective students interested in McMurry’s athletic training program should fill out the Prospective Athlete Questionnaire on McMurry’s athletic site and then check “Sports Medicine” under the “Athletic Information” section of the questionnaire.
