ABILENE, Texas - Bailey Marcum pounded 19 kills and McMurry's defense recorded ten team blocks while holding East Texas Baptist to a .058 hitting percentage on its way to a 21-15, 25-19, 20-25, 25-18, 15-9 win over the Tigers Friday night at Kimbrell Arena.
ETBU entered with just one conference loss but left with an 11-2 mark in American Southwest Conference play and fell to 15-7 overall. The two teams battled in the second game of the ASC Crossover Tournament on McMurry's floor.
McMurry and the Tigers alternated sets in the first four with ETBU taking sets one and three. However, McMurry battled back to win the final two sets to improve to 12-9 overall and 9-5 in conference play. After a 4-7 start, McMurry has won eight of its last 11 matches.
Marcum hit a match-high .457 for the night. The sophomore middle blocker had just three attack errors on 35 attacks and also recorded seven total blocks to lead McMurry's charge. M.J. Vickers added 13 kills with a .200 hitting percentage and three assisted blocks while Terah Brown added 11 kills and two assisted blocks.
Carmyn Wingrove and Kelsey Campbell teamed up to combine for 53 assists and help McMurry hit .191 as a team. Wingrove finished with 29 assists and Campbell had 24. Sarah Anding led the team with 19 digs while Danielle Kelton had 18 and Brenda Jackson added 17.
The Tigers are the second-place team from the ASC East Division saw good performances from Kourtney Adams who had 14 kills and Jane Hays narrowly missed a double-double with 10 digs and eight kills.
In the fifth and deciding set, ETBU knotted the score at two when Jackson had a service error for McMurry. However, McMurry went on a 9-2 run to make the score 11-4 and held on for victory.
McMurry will play two more crossover matches Saturday facing Mississippi College at 9:30 a.m. and Mary Hardin-Baylor at 5 p.m.
