The No. 17-ranked McMurry women’s golf team leaves for Waverly, Iowa Sunday in preparation for Tuesday’s first round of the NCAA Division III Women’s Golf Championships. Head coach Russ Evans and the team are coming off their first ever American Southwest Conference title, which gave the group an automatic qualifier to nationals.

This will be the first trip for McMurry’s women to the national tournament as a team since 2005. And Evans said that he feels as good about this group than any other team he’s coached.

“This is from top to bottom, one through five, the strongest team I’ve had in 10 years of coaching,” Evans said. “They’re just good players, and I think that we have yet to play at our best level and that there’s still another level we can go to.”

The team is made up of three seniors and two underclassmen. Two of the seniors, Barbara John and Meagan Harris played as freshman in the 2005 national tournament. So, Evans said that the two experienced players would provide valuable help and experience to the other members of the team.

“I think just from the stand point of having been there and knowing what to expect will help the other girls out a lot,” said Evans. “There’s a lot of anxiousness and there will be some tournament butterflies; it’s probably the biggest tournament they’ll play in, in their lifetime and it’s the only 72-hole tournament that they play in.”

The Centennial Oaks Golf Club will be the site of the 20-team field May 13-16 and Wartburg College will play host with tee times beginning at 7:30 each morning. All teams will get a practice round Monday May 12.

“If everybody plays to their ability, there’s no chance we can’t be in the running for this thing,” Evans said. “There are still great things ahead if we play like we can.”

McMurry’s John, Meagan Harris, Monica Harris, Libby Scarlett and Erin McPherson will be McMurry’s representatives in the national tournament. Each day, the top four individual scores will be counted towards the team score.
