Designated hitter / first baseman Brent Voorhees of McMurry University and southpaw Ryan Kulik of Rowan University have been named the second NCAA Division III National Hitter of the Week and Pitcher of the Week for the week of March 10-16,2008, as chosen by members of the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.
Voorhees, a senior playing in his home town of Abilene, Texas, hit safely in all of his team’s six games that included a series win over Texas Lutheran and victories against nationally-ranked Marietta and Southwestern in the annual Abilene Baseball Classic. On the week, Voorhees batted. 619 (13-21) with five doubles, two home runs, a 1.143 slugging pct., 14 RBI and 12 runs scored as McMurry went 5-1. He had multiple hits in every game, had five RBI in a game vs. Texas-Tyler and four vs. Texas Lutheran, and scored four runs in a game vs. Southwestern. He was named the American Southwest Conference West Division Hitter of the Week for his performance.
Kulik, a senior from Marlton, N.J., earned New Jersey Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week honors for the second time this season after recording a pair of victories for the Profs. He surrendered three hits and no walks in six innings while tying a school record with 15 strikeouts in Rowan’s 7-0 blanking of Alvernia. He then allowed three hits and one earned run in four innings while striking out five in a 17-8 win over Massachusetts-Liberal Arts in the first game of the Profs’ spring trip to Florida. For the week, he was 2-0 with a 0.90 ERA, 20 strikeouts in 10 innings, and six hits allowed. Kulik improved his record to 3-0 overall on the season.
